James ernest-James West-Alfred Harold “Alf” Albut

James Ernest Mangnall (4 January 1866 – 13 January 1932) was an English football manager who started his career with Burnley and managed Manchester United between 1903–1912 and then went on to manage Manchester City from 1912–1924, and is the only man to date to have managed both clubs.

James West was the second full-time secretary and de facto manager of football club Newton Heath, the precursor to Manchester United; the term “manager” was not in common usage at the club until the arrival of Jack Robson in 1914.) West oversaw Newton Heath’s financial collapse and near bankruptcy, followed by the club’s rebirth as Manchester United on 28 April 1902.

Alfred Harold “Alf” Albut, more commonly known as A. H. Albut, is best known for being the first full-time employee of Newton Heath. He was made club secretary in 1892 and, in that capacity, took responsibility for all team affairs. He conducted his work from an office at 33 Oldham Road, Newton Heath, near the club’s North Road ground. remained in the post until James West took over in 1900. Prior to working for Newton Heath, Albut had been in the employ of Aston Villa, although in an unspecified capacity.
